Tea Parties are more than just a rally
As the Tea Party Express rolls across the country, the American people are turning out in Cities large and small. After just a few days on tour it is clear that “we the people” are energized and motivated against blatant corruption and expansion of government against the will of most Americans. Translating that energy into achieving political results is much more tricky.
There is a disconnect in many dedicated political circles to the reality of rampant ignorance and apathy among the American electorate. There is a dangerous temptation to surround yourself with only those people who share a narrow political ideology to shield yourself from opposing ideas and philosophies in an effort to maintain the demonization of the political opposition. This self-inflicted ignorance is a major impediment to coalition growth and eventual political victory.
I signed on to the Tea Party Express because I am committed to working with organizations that have the ability and desire to reach beyond the base to educate the uninformed and inspire the uninvolved. This kind of outreach comes with both a financial and political cost. The vast majority of voters don’t belong to your Facebook group or read your blog. They don’t listen to talk radio or attend political rallies. They have opinions but those opinions are not so well established that they cannot be influenced by well placed ads and by the reasoned arguments of a friend or family member. The Tea Party Express events are designed to inspire those in attendance to break the taboo of political discussion. To reach everybody else they run pointed ads in the traditional media.
We have committed our time and energy because we believe that each of you will take the steps necessary to produce victory in 2010. We are developing a long term strategy designed to produce and train principled candidates, and your involvement makes that possible. We thank you for your encouragement and support as we fight for a better tomorrow for all Americans.
