A Moderate Joins the Republican Primary Against Boxer
Former five term US representative and state finance director under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced that will forgo a gubernatorial run and enter the field opposing Barbara Boxer. This will be Campbell’s third run for the senate. In 1992 Campbell narrowly lost in the Republican primary and in 2000 Campbell lost to incumbent Diane Feinstein by 19 points in the general election.
Campbell self-identifies as a moderate Republican because of his position on social issues. From the LA Times:
“But the road ahead remains rocky, as Campbell tries to persuade the conservative voters who control the party’s primaries to overlook his moderate views on social issues and his recent support for temporary tax hikes to help balance California’s budget.”
Campbell’s entrance into the race could prove to benefit conservative candidate Chuck DeVore. Campbell and Former HP CEO Carly Fiorina could split the silicon valley vote, leaving the staunchly conservative DeVore to take down Boxer.
Again from the LA Times:“But Campbell’s political base is in the moderate Silicon Valley, so he stands to threaten Fiorina on her home turf.”
