Jon Ralston column unfairly blasts Sharron Angle

July 19th, 2010

Nevada Columnist Jon Ralston hit Sharron Angle hard Sunday in his Reno Gazette Journal column.  The column portrays the Angle campaign as woefully unprepared against the brutal and vicious campaign machine of Harry Reid which has been slamming Angle with lies since the day after she won the Primary. Ralston based his attack on the Mason-Dixon group releasing a new poll showing Reid ahead of Angle by 7%. Other polls show a narrow margin but indicate that the attack ads being run by Reid and his support groups are having a negative effect on Angle’s image.

Sharron Angle’s campaign may have made a few missteps so far but I believe there is enough time for her to convince voters that the lies flooding from the Reid camp are just more “smear politics”. Voters are tired of politicians who do not stand for the issues important to most Americans. Nevada voters will know where Sharron stands on these issues before the November election. We already know where Harry Reid stands; for his own power. It is clear that there is no standard of decency and debate in American politics. There is also no meaner or dirtier campaigner than Harry Reid. Reid is able to build a campaign on lies thanks to a complicit and biased media who refuse to call him on his tactics. To his credit, Ralston did elude to some of Reid’s campaign accusations attack being a bit harsh but stopped short of calling them lies.

Reid knows that standing alone on his record will not win him reelection. He is depending on creating enough negative pressure on Angle that people will either stay away from the polls altogether or check the box reading “none of these candidates”. There are also several third party candidates to choose from helping Reid more than Angle. Sharron Angle is the right candidate at the right time for the unique problems facing America right now. Attacking her for not being a polished yet do nothing politician will do nothing to stop a government that has grown too large with reckless spending that is destroying the future of our children and grandchildren.

Mr. Ralston may prefer candidates who are able to speak for hours without telling us anything about who they are or what they are going to do. If we care about our future, Nevada needs to elect a genuine patriot who understands the issues at stake or we all are going down with the ship, including him. Journalists should refrain from sensationalizing a few words for their entertainment value, allowing candidates to correct a few words taken out of context rather than crucifying them for it.
